Day 60- Thursday, 5/10- Winston Salem, NC- (0) (533.5 total)

Spent most of today running around taking care of the usual errands. Connie was nice enough to drive me around to a local outdoor outfitter that I found on Yelp, the supermarket, and the drug store. Nice to be...

Day 55- Saturday, 5/5- Lost Mountain Shelter, VA- (16 miles) (486.1 total)

A day of 5s for me. My 55th day on the trail just so happens to fall on 5/5. Happy Cinco Di Mayo everyone! Well, thunderstorms and rain were predicted today, but for the most part they held off....

Day 49- Sunday, 4/29- Unnamed campsite- (16 miles) (410.8 total)

Got up early this morning and Dave the hostel owner ran me back to the trail. Got started around 7:50am, which isn’t too bad for leaving town.

Today’s milestone was passing the 400 mile mark on the trail....

Day 43- Monday, 4/23- Erwin, Tennessee- (0) (343.8 total)

The plan was to get back on the trail today, but Mother Nature had different ideas. The weather in town was actually not bad at all, but the national weather service had high wind warnings for up in the mountains...

Day 35

Had a nice day off here at the Terminello’s place. Slept in a bit- always nice not to have to crawl out of my tent into the cold, dark morning at 5am. Mr. T cooked up a nice breakfast of pancakes and eggs which was awesome. Then Christina took me to the local sup...

Day 28

Nice day off today in Gatlinburg. Woke up to snow in the hills above us, so grateful that we were nice and warm down here. Heard they had sleet and snow up there and 20mph winds. Temperatures in the high teens. What a mess. I’m sharing a motel room with this guy...

Day 23

Had a wonderful day at Dennis and Gwen’s place today. Slept in a bit in my own room with my own bed. Didn’t have to share a room with 3 other hikers which was a nice change. Had breakfast with them when I got up and then just relaxed and caught up online and did...

Day 17

Wow, today was a great example of how town days are not always relaxing days. The morning was awesome. The First Baptist Church of Franklin does a free all you can eat pancake breakfast. They came with shuttles at 7:10am to all the hiker hostels in town and picke...

Day 13

Back on the trail again today. I stayed alone at the motel last night, as my friends had headed out earlier that day and I needed the zero. When I got off the trail the day before, I met a guy briefly who was hanging out where I was waiting for the shuttle into t...

Day 6

Today has been my first “zero day” on the trail. A zero day is a day when you don’t hike at all. Totally take the day off. A “nero day” is a “near zero,” where you do short miles, usually on your way to town. Like if you hike just 2 hours in the morning or somethi...

ABOUT ME

My name is Micah Pexa. I was born and raised in the beautiful state of Hawaii and I work as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher. I got my teaching degrees at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and have taught overseas in Thailand, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. My hobbies include hiking, camping, bodyboarding, and watching Denver Broncos football! I'm currently teaching English overseas here in Taif, Saudi Arabia. I initially came over here to pay off student loans, but now that those are gone, I'm saving for this hike and whatever comes afterwards.
